What Qualifications Do You Need to Start a Lash Business in NZ?
If you are thinking about starting your own lash business in New Zealand, one of your first questions may be: what qualifications do I actually need?
Do you need a beauty therapy qualification?
Do you need an NZQA lash qualification?
Can you complete a private lash course and work for yourself?
And is receiving a lash certificate enough to start taking paying clients?
The answer is more nuanced than simply saying you need one particular certificate.
New Zealand does not currently have one national qualification or licence that every eyelash extension technician must hold. However, that does not mean there are no responsibilities when you start providing professional lash services. The Ministry of Health has noted that there is no national regulatory framework covering the appearance industries as a whole.
Here is what beginners should understand before starting a lash business in NZ.
Do You Need a Beauty Qualification to Start a Lash Business in NZ?
There is not one general requirement that every person offering eyelash extensions must first complete a full beauty therapy qualification.
Many lash technicians enter the industry through specialist eyelash extension training rather than studying beauty therapy as a whole.
However, the important question is not simply whether you can call yourself a lash technician.
You need the practical knowledge to provide the service safely and professionally.
That includes understanding natural lashes, hygiene, isolation, adhesive, appropriate lash selection, placement, removal, aftercare and when a treatment should not proceed.
Training should give you the foundation for those skills, then you need practise before working independently with paying clients.
Do You Need an NZQA Qualification to Do Eyelash Extensions?
There is no single specific NZQA lash qualification that every eyelash extension technician in New Zealand is required to hold before providing the service.
This distinction matters because private lash training and formal NZQA qualifications are not the same thing.
A private educator may provide professional lash training and issue a Certificate of Completion without that course being an NZQA qualification.
That does not automatically tell you whether the training is good or bad.
It simply tells you that they are different types of education.

What Training Should You Complete Before Taking Clients?
Even where a particular qualification is not nationally mandated, I strongly recommend proper professional training before charging for eyelash extensions.
You are working millimetres from someone's eyes.
A beginner course should teach you much more than how to make lashes look pretty.
You should understand areas including:
hygiene and client preparation
natural lash health
contraindications and precautions
lash products and tools
isolation
adhesive control
extension selection
correct placement
lash mapping and styling
checking for stickies
safe removal
aftercare
practical application
Completing the lessons is only the beginning.
You then need to practise until you can apply what you have learned consistently.
Does a Lash Certificate Mean You're Ready to Open a Business?
Not necessarily.
A certificate shows what training you have completed according to that provider's requirements.
It does not automatically mean you are ready to perform a full professional service independently.
Your practical ability matters.
Before taking paying clients, you should be able to isolate reliably, select appropriate extensions, create safe attachment, control your adhesive and thoroughly check your work for stickies.
You should also understand consultation, hygiene and aftercare.
If you have only just completed your course and still find basic application difficult, spend more time practising before putting pressure on yourself to work at full commercial speed.
Do You Need a Licence to Start a Lash Business?
There is no single national “lash technician licence” that every lash artist in New Zealand applies for.
But that does not mean every business has identical requirements.
Business.govt.nz advises people starting a business to check what central and local government regulations apply to their particular industry and region.
Your obligations can depend on factors such as where you operate, the type of premises you use, your business structure and the services you provide.
This is why I would always check your own circumstances rather than relying on what another lash artist in a different city was told.
What If You Want to Run Your Lash Business From Home?
A home lash studio can be a practical way to start because it may keep your overheads considerably lower than renting commercial premises.
But working from home does not mean you should automatically assume there are no rules to consider.
Business.govt.nz recommends checking with your local council about matters such as zoning, signage and any relevant operating requirements when setting up a home business. It also notes that ordinary household insurance may not automatically cover business use of your home or business assets.
Depending on your situation, you may also need to consider tenancy conditions, mortgage requirements or body corporate rules.

Do You Need to Register a Company?
Not necessarily.
A small lash business does not automatically need to be incorporated as a limited company.
Common New Zealand business structures include sole trader, partnership and company, and they have different legal and financial implications.
Many small businesses begin as sole traders.
Business.govt.nz describes a sole trader as a relatively simple business structure, while a company is a separate legal entity.
Choose the structure that fits your circumstances rather than assuming that having a professional business means you must immediately create a company.
What Do You Need to Do as a Sole Trader?
If you operate as a sole trader, you use your individual IRD number and pay tax on your net business profit.
Inland Revenue says self-employed people generally use their individual IRD number, file an individual income tax return and can claim eligible business expenses.
Business.govt.nz also explains that sole traders need to tell Inland Revenue that they are working for themselves. An NZBN is optional for sole traders, although Business.govt.nz recommends having one.
Your exact setup will depend on your circumstances, so use current Inland Revenue and Business.govt.nz guidance when establishing your business.
Do Lash Technicians Need to Register for GST?
Not automatically when you start.
Inland Revenue states that GST registration is required when turnover from taxable activities reaches at least NZ$60,000 in a 12-month period, or you expect it to reach that amount in the next 12 months. Registration is also required if you add GST to the prices you charge.
This is based on turnover, not profit.
Tax rules can change, so check the current Inland Revenue requirements rather than relying on an old social media post or another technician's situation.
Do You Need Insurance for a Lash Business?
Insurance is something I would investigate before taking paying clients.
The appropriate cover depends on your business and circumstances.
Speak directly with an insurer or broker and explain exactly which treatments you provide.
Ask what training evidence they require and what the policy does and does not cover.
If you operate from home, also check how running a business affects your existing home and contents insurance because personal policies may not automatically cover business activities or assets.
Do not assume that receiving a particular lash certificate automatically guarantees insurance cover.
Confirm it with the insurer.
Do Council Requirements Differ Around New Zealand?
They can.
The Ministry of Health has stated that New Zealand does not have one national framework regulating the appearance industries as a whole.
That makes it especially important to check requirements relevant to the location where you actually intend to operate.
If you move your business to another council area later, check again rather than assuming the requirements will be identical.
What About Health and Safety?
Professional lash work involves more than creating a beautiful finished result.
Think about the environment you are creating for both yourself and your clients.
That includes hygiene, safe product use, clean equipment, appropriate ventilation, ergonomics, client records and maintaining a professional workspace.
Your lash training should give you a good foundation for treatment-specific safety, but running a business introduces additional responsibilities.
Business.govt.nz recommends checking the regulations relevant to your industry and business when you start.
What Qualification Do My Lash Students Receive?

Online training can give you the education you need to begin developing your practical skills, but watching lessons alone does not make someone ready for paying clients.
You need to practise.
That may begin with practice lashes or a mannequin before progressing to live models.
Take photographs, examine your application closely and ask your educator for feedback.
Your goal should not be to open your booking calendar as quickly as possible.
Your goal should be to reach a point where you understand what you are doing and can provide the service safely and consistently.
What Should You Have in Place Before Taking Paying Clients?
Think beyond the certificate.
Before opening your bookings, you should have appropriate training, enough practical experience for the services you are offering and suitable professional products and equipment.
You should also have investigated:
your business structure
tax obligations
applicable council requirements
insurance
your workspace
consultation and client records
pricing
booking and cancellation policies
hygiene procedures
aftercare information
You do not need to build a huge salon before accepting your first client.
But the business behind your service should be treated professionally from the beginning.
So, What Qualifications Do You Actually Need to Start a Lash Business in NZ?
There is no single national lash qualification or licence that every eyelash extension technician in New Zealand must hold.
But that should never be interpreted as meaning education does not matter.
Professional lash training gives you the foundation to understand the treatment you are performing.
Practical experience develops your hands-on ability.
Then, starting a business brings another layer of responsibilities involving tax, insurance, premises, local requirements and professional systems.
Separate those questions.
First ask: Do I have the training and practical ability to perform lashes safely?
Then ask: Have I correctly set up the business I am going to operate?
When both sides are taken seriously, you are building a much stronger foundation for your lash career.
