If you want to become a lash technician in New Zealand, one of the first decisions you will need to make is how you want to learn.
Should you choose an online lash course and study at your own pace?
Is private one-to-one training worth the higher cost?
Or would a traditional in-person group course suit you better?
There is no single training format that is right for every beginner.
Your budget, location, learning style, available time and the amount of practical support you want can all influence which option makes the most sense.
I have worked in the New Zealand lash industry for more than 12 years and have been training lash students for 8 years. In this guide, I will explain the main differences between online, private and in-person lash training so you can decide which format suits you.
What Types of Lash Courses Are Available in NZ?
Beginner lash training in New Zealand generally comes in several formats.
You may find:

small-group in-person courses
larger classroom-style courses
blended training combining online theory with practical sessions
The course format is important, but it should not be the only thing you compare.
Two online courses can provide completely different levels of education and support. The same is true of two in-person courses.
Always look at the educator, curriculum, practical training, student support and what happens after the initial lessons.
What Is an Online Lash Course?
An online lash course allows you to complete your training remotely.
Lessons may include written theory, demonstrations, videos, quizzes or assessments, depending on the provider.
The biggest advantage is flexibility.
You can study from home and usually fit the training around work, children or other commitments.
You are also not restricted to educators who happen to live in your city.
This can be particularly useful in New Zealand, where travelling to another city for specialist training can add accommodation, flights or driving costs to the course price.
What Are the Advantages of Online Lash Training?
One of the biggest benefits is being able to learn at your own pace.
If you do not understand a demonstration the first time, you can replay it.
If you need to take a break and return later, you can.
This can make online training particularly useful for students who like to process information slowly rather than trying to remember everything taught during one intensive training day.
Online courses can also be more affordable than private practical training because the educator does not need to spend the entire course physically teaching one student.

What Are the Disadvantages of Online Lash Training?
Online training requires self-discipline.
Nobody is standing beside you telling you to practise.
You need to organise your own practice time, models and working environment.
The quality of support also varies significantly between online courses.
Some courses provide little interaction once you have purchased them. Others allow students to ask questions, submit work or receive educator feedback.
For a practical skill like eyelash extensions, I consider access to support particularly valuable.
When comparing online courses, find out what happens when you actually start practising and something does not work.
Can You Really Learn Lash Extensions Online?
Yes, the theory and application techniques can be taught online, but watching videos is not the same as developing practical ability.
You still need to pick up your tweezers and practise.
Your hands need to learn isolation, adhesive pickup, placement and direction through repetition.
A good online course should give you a structured method to follow while you develop those practical skills.

What Is Private One-to-One Lash Training?
Private training means the educator's attention is focused on one student rather than being divided across a group.
This allows the training to move according to your progress.
If you struggle with isolation, your educator can spend more time correcting it.
If you understand one technique quickly, you can move forward without waiting for an entire class.
Private training can also make it easier for an educator to observe small details such as how you hold your tweezers, your working position or the angle of your placement.
What Are the Advantages of Private Lash Training?
The biggest advantage is individual attention.
You can ask questions as they arise and receive immediate correction.
This can be especially useful for complete beginners who are nervous about learning a practical skill.
Private training can also be adapted more easily to the student.
My own private one-to-one lash training in Christchurch combines online theory with four practical sessions, live model work and a professional starter kit.
This means students can learn the theory before their practical sessions and then use our time together primarily for hands-on development.
What Are the Disadvantages of Private Training?
Private training usually costs more than an online course or some group courses.
You are paying for dedicated educator time and, depending on the course, potentially equipment, products, models or a starter kit.
It can also require travel if the educator you want to learn from is not located nearby.
For some students, that additional investment is worthwhile because they want intensive hands-on guidance.
For others, online training provides the flexibility and affordability they need.
Neither decision is automatically wrong.
What Is Group In-Person Lash Training?
Group training usually involves several students learning with one educator at the same time.
The number of students can vary considerably.
A small group may still provide plenty of educator interaction, while a larger class can mean less individual attention.
In-person group courses can be enjoyable because you are learning alongside other beginners who are experiencing many of the same challenges.
You can observe other students' questions and techniques as well as your own.
What Are the Advantages of Group Training?
You have an educator physically present while you practise.
This means they may be able to identify problems with your hand position, isolation or placement immediately.
You can also ask questions in real time.
Some students simply learn better when they are physically in a training environment rather than studying independently at home.
Group training may also cost less than private one-to-one education while still providing face-to-face instruction.
What Are the Disadvantages of Group Training?
The educator's attention needs to be divided between students.
How much this matters depends heavily on class size.
If several beginners all need help at the same time, you may need to wait.
Group courses also follow a schedule.
If you need more time on a particular technique, the class may still need to move forward.
Before booking group training, I would ask how many students will be attending and how much practical work is included.
Is a One-Day Lash Course Enough?
A one-day course can introduce you to a large amount of information, but becoming competent at eyelash extensions requires practise afterwards.
The more useful question is not simply how many hours the course lasts.
Ask what happens after the course.
Can you revisit the lessons?
Can you contact your educator?
Can you send photographs for feedback?
Is there a clear practice plan?
A short training session followed by strong ongoing support may sometimes be more useful than a longer course where support disappears immediately afterwards.
Online vs In-Person Lash Training: Which Is Better?
Neither format is automatically better for everyone.
Online training may suit you if you:
need flexibility
live far from your preferred educator
want to learn at your own pace
like replaying demonstrations
have a smaller training budget
are comfortable organising your own practise
In-person training may suit you if you:
learn best through hands-on instruction
want someone physically observing your technique
prefer a scheduled learning environment
feel more confident with immediate face-to-face guidance
Private training may suit you particularly well if you want the highest level of individual attention.

How Much Do Lash Courses Cost in NZ?
Prices vary significantly.
An online course can cost a few hundred dollars, while intensive private training may cost considerably more.
The price can depend on:
course length
educator experience
techniques included
level of individual support
whether practical sessions are included
whether a starter kit is included
course access period
assessments or feedback
Do not compare price alone.
A cheaper course that leaves you needing to purchase another course immediately afterwards may not be better value.
Likewise, a more expensive course is not automatically better simply because it costs more.

Should Your Lash Course Include a Starter Kit?
A starter kit can be helpful because it allows you to begin practising without having to source every product individually.
But check what is actually included.
A large kit is not necessarily a good kit.
The products should be appropriate for the techniques you are learning and useful for genuine practise.
Some courses include kits in the price, while others make them optional.

What Should a Beginner Lash Course Teach?
Regardless of whether the course is online, private or group-based, the fundamentals should be taken seriously.
Look for training that covers areas such as natural lash knowledge, hygiene, consultation, isolation, adhesive control, extension selection, placement, styling, stickies, removal and aftercare.
You also need clear demonstrations of the actual application process.
A beginner course should give you a structured foundation rather than simply showing you how to create one particular lash look.
What About Certification and Accreditation?
Ask exactly what certificate you receive after completing the course.
A private Certificate of Completion is not automatically the same as an NZQA qualification.
Likewise, if a course is advertised as accredited, find out who provides the accreditation and what it means.
Do not choose training because of one impressive word without understanding the credential behind it.

How Important Is the Lash Educator?
Very important.
You are not simply purchasing videos, notes or a certificate.
You are learning a practical professional skill from another person.
Look at the educator's own work.
How long have they been in the industry?
Do they actively perform lashes?
How long have they taught students?
Can you see genuine student results or reviews?
Do they provide support after the initial training?
A strong educator should be able to explain not only what to do, but also why something is going wrong when you struggle.
What Type of Lash Course Is Best for Complete Beginners?
The best format is the one that gives you enough education and support to learn properly while fitting realistically into your life.
If you are self-motivated, comfortable practising independently and want flexibility, a comprehensive online course with educator support can be a strong option.
If you know you learn best with someone physically beside you, private or small-group training may suit you better.
If you want both flexibility and intensive practical guidance, blended training can provide a useful combination.
Focus less on finding the universally “best” format and more on finding a course you will actually complete, practise and use.

Then investigate the actual educator and course.
The format matters, but the quality of the education matters more.
